Nigeria's entertainment industry was plunged into grief today as news broke of the death of Alexx Ekubo, one of Nollywood's most celebrated and recognisable faces. The actor, whose full name was Alexx Ekubo Okwaraeke, died after a prolonged and courageous battle with kidney cancer. He was 40 years old. Family sources confirmed that Ekubo passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, having spent his final months away from the public eye in what was later understood to be a private struggle with his illness. His death was formally announced on Tuesday by talent manager and filmmaker Sam Olatunji, and has since been confirmed by close colleagues, setting off a wave of tributes that swept across the nation's social media platforms within hours. Born on April 10, 1986, in Arochukwu, Abia State, in the South East of Nigeria, Alexx Ekubo was the son of a family that produced a man of remarkable discipline and ambition. He received his secondary education at Federal Government College, Daura, in Katsina State, a detail that spoke to the breadth of his Nigerian experience, before proceeding to study Law at the University of Calabar. It was not the courtroom, however, that would hold him. The screen called louder. Ekubo made his first foray into acting in 2003, taking a minor role in Sinners in the House, but it was his emergence as first runner up at the prestigious Mr. Nigeria pageant in 2010 that thrust him into the national spotlight. From there, he never looked back. His role in Weekend Getaway marked his true breakthrough, and he went on to feature in more than 100 films across a career that spanned over two decades. Among his most celebrated works were Omo Ghetto: The Saga, The Bling Lagosians, and A Sunday Affair, films that showcased a range that stretched from sharp comedy to nuanced dramatic performance. Audiences across Nigeria and the diaspora came to know him for his charisma, his effortless charm, and a screen presence that made any film he joined richer for his being in it. Ekubo's impact extended well beyond his film credits. In 2020, he was named among the “Most Influential People of African Descent Under 40” by the United Nations, a recognition that underscored the reach of his work and the depth of his humanitarian engagement. The following year, he received an honorary degree in Arts and Culture from ISCG University and was also recognised with the Global Social Giving Actor of the Year award in 2021. At the height of his career, industry estimates placed his net worth between $1.5 million and $3 million, built through acting, endorsements, luxury brand collaborations, and international film engagements. He was, by any measure, one of the most commercially successful and critically respected actors of his generation. In the months before his death, concern for Ekubo had mounted steadily. His last post on Instagram was published on December 30, 2024, a digital silence that stretched over sixteen months and left fans unsettled. A viral video that later surfaced online showed the actor interacting warmly with a group of children, but observers noted a visible change in his appearance: he appeared considerably slimmer, and his demeanour, though gentle, was subdued. In hindsight, the nation was watching a man quietly managing a terminal diagnosis. According to reports, Ekubo had been placed on life support in the days before his death, fighting until the very end. The tributes that followed the announcement were immediate, heartfelt, and for a country that had loved him so publicly, deeply personal. Actress Funke Akindele posted on her Instagram Story: “Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace. ‘Ore mi,’ like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together.” Actor Bolanle Ninalowo, writing from the United States, offered simply: “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all.” Fellow actor Godwin Nnadiekwe captured what many felt when he wrote: “I'm struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I'm lost for words because this wasn't the plan, Alex Ekubo.” Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore also paid tribute, writing: “I never met him personally, but I still cannot forget a movie of his I watched on an Emirates flight from New York to Dubai en route to Nairobi. He was a rare talent whose presence lit up the screen effortlessly. May he rest in power.” Actor Peter Okoye was among dozens of other public figures who added their voices to the chorus of mourning, as tributes continued to pour in through the evening hours. For all his public fame, Ekubo guarded his personal life carefully. He was briefly engaged to US based model Fancy Acholonu, but the engagement was called off in December 2021. Acholonu later apologised publicly, expressing continued affection for the actor. Ekubo, characteristically, addressed the public curiosity about his marital status with disarming humour, indicating that he was focused on building his finances rather than answering to anyone about his love life. He had no known children. His immediate family has not yet issued a formal statement, and funeral arrangements are yet to be announced as of the time of this report. Alexx Ekubo was not simply a movie star. He was, in the truest sense, a reflection of what modern Nigeria can produce: educated, globally recognised, rooted in his culture, and possessed of a generosity of spirit that earned him respect far beyond the reach of any film credit. Nollywood has, in recent years, suffered the loss of several beloved figures. But the loss of Ekubo at 40, so young, so full of stories yet to be told, registers as something particularly painful. It is the loss not just of work already done, but of all the work that will now never be made. His colleagues say he lit up every room he entered. His films say the rest. Nigeria bids farewell to one of its finest. May he rest in perfect peace.
